‘Only One Way Out of Town’, the new album by NZ’s internationally acclaimed folk and blues guitarist, singer and songwriter Chris Thompson recorded live at Pinenut Records label owners’ 60th Birthday gig by the river in Hamilton, NZ on Sunday, 2nd August 2020. Songs cover the range of Chris’ extensive career played in plug-in acoustic finger pick and slide guitar styles. From his first previously unreleased music composition written back at high school in 1966, to songs written during lockdown earlier this year. Also featuring some of his best known classics, two covers, and three tracks with sometime collaborator Stan Jagger on second guitar, album tallying 19 songs, performed in 3 sets plus an encore. Practiced and practiced during lockdown, performed during returned level 1 post lock-down.
The opening notes of ‘Chelsea Blues’, a self-described theme song, confirmed all that we suspected. This was vintage Thompson, focused yet relaxed, strong of voice but subtle and nuanced, wringing every ounce of meaning from evocative lyrics. And the guitar work was beyond sublime.
